BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, June 14: The young people have become the main contributors in ensuring blood supply in Brunei, the country’s Health Minister Haji Md Isham said on Monday.
In his message in conjunction with the World Blood Donor Day, which falls on June 14 every year, the minister urged young people in the country to pioneer activities as well as initiatives to achieve a safe blood supply through voluntary blood donation.
“This is because youth makes up a large sector of the population and they are full of idealism, passion and creativity,” the minister said.
“To ensure that the blood given to patients is safe, the Blood Donation Center continues to actively plan and organize a number of systematic measures to reduce the risk of infection through blood transfusions,” he added.
The minister also said that blood and blood product transfusion can save millions of lives throughout the world each year. Among patients who often require immediate blood transfusion are emergency patients and anemic children.
Brunei’s health ministry also organizes voluntary blood donation drives from Monday until July 4 to celebrate the World Blood Donor Day and encourage locals to become regular blood donors.
The World Blood Donor Day is set to raise the public’s awareness of the need and importance of continuous blood donation, and this year’s slogan is “Give Blood and Keep the World Beating.” Enditem
